UNIX Documentation in Hypertext Form Kent University Prof. Peter Brown Prof John Slater The project aims to produce on-line UNIX documentation which is both effective and pleasant to use. This will be done using hypertext techniques, which will help each reader to focus more quickly on the material they want to peruse. The project will use the GUIDE hypertext system, running on graphics workstations or X terminals. Such hardware, which will be quite widespread when the project comes to comp- letion in three year's time, allows the high-bandwidth interface between user and documentation that the project needs to realize its goals. The project will capture existing UNIX documentation (in particular manual pages), and will allow hypertext links within the documentation. Attractive possibilities are links between UNIX documentation and notices of local courses or bug reports. New documents can be created directly in hypertext form, using a WYSIWYG interface, and can exploit a richer set of facilities than documents mechanically con- verted from a paper-based format. An important part of the project is evaluation to help ensure that the work fits a variety of sites. We are therefore pleased that ICL, together with Leicester and Bath Universities, have agreed to collaborate in the evaluation stages. _______________________________________________________________________ | | | In general the copyright for material on the NISS Bulletin Board | | is held by the CHEST & NISS Centre (University of Bath) or by the | | authors. | | | | Copying or reproduction of the material is permitted provided that | | | | (a) the source is acknowledged | | and (b) the material is not used for commercial gain. | | | | However, material must not be made available outside the academic | | community without prior consent. | |_______________________________________________________________________|
