ARC/INFO Training and GIS Tutorials

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) software, such
as the ARC/INFO package recently acquired for the
community by CHEST, create major problems of service
delivery and support, yet they are a powerful tool in
all science and commerce where a spatial component is
involved. Currently, GIS are a major growth area in
computing. The major problem inhibiting further
applications is that very few users outside geography
have access to essential background concepts. The
major objective of the project is to provide materials
to enable workers in other disciplines to use the
technology correctly. The project is related to one at
Southampton University which intends to create
materials relating to general awareness of GIS potentials.

The project will undertake four linked activities
aimed to promote and extend the use of GIS software:

     1. collation and dissemination of exisiting
        training materials for commonly-used GIS.
     2. development of a set of training materials for
the ARC/INFO package using UK data.
     3. distribution and some support for the public domain
        GRASS system for SUN platforms.
     4. development of computer-based tutorials to
        illustrate basic concepts in GIS.
