Relational Database Management Systems: self-teaching materials especially for Ingres and Oracle Newcastle Univ Dr Lorna Weatherill The aim of this proposal is to produce and market high quality, 'teach-yourself' materials aimed at the academic users of relational databases. Several specific sets of materials will be produced and distributed to potential users. These will include the following:- - Example databases about a variety of academic applications will be developed on a variety of platforms. The main focus will be Ingres and Oracle but other products will be developed as well. - Materials about the theoretical considerations in designing a relational database will be written and the example databases will be used to illustrate the processes of design and creation. - There will be 'step-by-step instructions about getting started using particular database products both on PCs and other platforms. Here too the main focus will be Ingres and Oracle Investments in database software by the higher educational community in recent years has been considerable. These self-teaching materials will ensure that the software becomes more fully understood by academics with little computing experience. In addition, by focussing on products for the end user, advisory work with databases in computing centres can become more productive with the benefit that staff can concentrate on advanced applications. _______________________________________________________________________ | | | In general the copyright for material on the NISS Bulletin Board | | is held by the CHEST & NISS Centre (University of Bath) or by the | | authors. | | | | Copying or reproduction of the material is permitted provided that | | | | (a) the source is acknowledged | | and (b) the material is not used for commercial gain. | | | | However, material must not be made available outside the academic | | community without prior consent. | |_______________________________________________________________________|
