Training and PC-based Support Tutorials for Statistical Applications University of Ulster Noel Wilson and Professor Sally Mc Clean The project aims to provide training materials in support of sampling procedures, questionnaire and coding frame design, and the use of statistical software in the analysis of survey data. Emphasis will be placed on the provision of a taxonomic approach to instruction with the presentation of an intuitive understanding of statistical methods. Data entry via SPSS/PC Data Entry module will be covered by producing hypertext-based tutorials. Further hypertext tutorials will be designed to provide training in inferential statistics using MINITAB; regression analysis using MINITAB and SPSS; scale construction and use of the SPSS RELIABILITY procedure and selected multivariate procedures available within SPSS and LISREL. Introductory information on questionnaire construction, pilot testing and data cleaning will be provided by a workbook. The design of this document will incorporate a range of illustrative examples to accompany theoretical considerations; a set of 'self test' exercises will also be provided. Data sets will be chosen from a range of disciplines in order to provide a representative suite of examples for the application of the statistical techniques being illustrated. Product details are available for each product as it is completed; these are posted on NISSBB or may be obtained directly from the persons named below.
