      The primary objectives of the project are:

      - To provide a modular training package to a high
        professional standard, for users, installers and managers
        of a range of X-Windows environments, including tailoring
        such environments for particular local needs.

      - To provide a training package on programming with Motif

      - To provide a variety of professional-quality training
        materials for self-teaching, assisted learning, and
        presentations. The materials will consist of:
        conventional workbooks; lecture notes and corresponding
        overhead projector slides.

      - To train computing centre and other staff in the
        application of the course materials.

      The following subject areas will be specifically covered:

      - an overview of X covering principles, philosophy and
        operation for: users, managers, system administrators;

      - the use of standard windowing systems: Openlook, Motif,
        and X11 plus public domain managers like twm;
        and tailoring the above to meet specific needs.

      - the structure and principles of Motif, and programming
        to a level of competency where straightforward tasks
        can be done.

      Verification will be done through:

      - formal assessment by an external referee appointed by
        the IUSC workstation working party;

      - holding workshops of interested parties, where trial
        courses will be given and formal evaluation of their
        content and effectiveness made;

      This is an 18 months project based in the Computing
      Service, The University of Edinburgh.
