Networking Courses and Training Materials
                        University of Exeter
                            John Buckett

The primary aim of the project is to increase the provision
of networking courses and associated training materials to
the UK academic community. Three courses have been produced
which are given by Computer Unit staff at Exeter University.
These courses provide places to the academic community at a
fraction of the cost of comparable commercially-run courses
and also concentrate on networking in a specifically academic
environment. All courses include a large practical element.

     The three courses are:

'Novell Netware on Campus'; The course covers how to setup
and run a service on a server running Netware version 3.12.
The training materials and a 'Training the Trainers' pack are
available via anonymous ftp (from flair.ex.ac.uk). This enables
computer centre staff to offer a similar course at their home
     site.

'Introduction to Data Communications and Networking'; This
course provides a straightforward introduction to data
communications for those with no previous experience of the
subject. It covers basic concepts such as parallel and serial
communications, and also includes X.25, Ethernet, and TCP/IP.
It is accompanied by a tutorial book which will also be available
     as a self teaching guide.

'TCP/IP on Campus PCs' ; This course covers the theory of
the TCP/IP protocols in more detail and includes the detailed
setting up of several TCP/IP products on PC's, including PC-NFS,
Lan WorkPlace, Beame and Whiteside, and Windows for Workgroups.
The tutorial book will be made generally available when completed.
