Multimedia Based IT Training for the Humanities
                           Hull University
                            Brian Powell

     This project is targeted at academic staff within the
     Humanities community. The objectives of the project are to
     develop, over three years, training materials with a
     Humanities bias directed towards the following areas:

       *  basic IT awareness;

       *  the use of authoring and presentation software;

       * the exploitation of multimedia resources.

     Our aim is to enable academics to use IT more productively
     both in their teaching and in their research. While the
     Humanities, in the broadest sense, constitute our target
     group, and within it, there is a strong demand for
     appropriate training, our products are intended to be of
     potential value to all academics who want to develop their
     IT skills.

     Our products will be self-access information packs and
     computer-based reference materials. They will relate to and
     run on widely available hardware platforms, and will use, as
     appropriate, easily accessible software. The intention is
     to ensure maximum use by as many people as possible.

     The project involves collaboration on development and
     evaluation between the Computer Centre and three Schools -
     of Arts, European Languages, and Humanities - at the
     University of Hull. It is located adjacent to the CTI
     Centre for Modern Languages and the TLTP Modern Languages
     Project. This will ensure cooperation at ground level
     between these educational technology initiatives, and the
     resultant synergy will be of benefit to the academic
     community as a whole.
