NEW FRONTIERS OF LEARNING Guidelines for Multimedia Courseware Developers in Higher Education Vol 1: Delivery, Production and Provision by Peter Davies and Tim Brailsford University of Nottingham ITTI REPORT This report is aimed primarily at those in higher education who are trying or planning to work with multimedia but are having trouble finding their way through the "multimedia swamp". It focuses on the technical issues associated with multimedia development and delivery, not on the pedagogical issues related to learning with computers, which are the province of Volume 2. Even so, the scope of Vol 1 is broad, and includes such topics as: delivery platforms and standards, add-ons and peripherals (such as CD-ROM drives and graphics cards), operating environments, multimedia on networks, project planning, QA and interface design, data standards and media preparation, high and low-level programming, institutional policy issues (such as career incentives and training), plus two specially commissioned chapters on project management and copyright. The report is divided into two parts: "Practical Guidelines" and "Issues in Depth". The first part covers the practicalities of developing multimedia products, while the second deals with technical issues in more depth. The report is peppered with highlighted guidelines and advice (which are all brought together in an Appendix), and includes an extensive bibliography, an indexed list of suppliers and services, a "quick-and-dirty" method of usability evaluation, a form for submitting corrections and entries of your own, and an extensive index.
