Evaluation 1: Planning, Developing and Testing of Courseware

This booklet is one of a group of publications produced as part
of the "Establishing Multimedia Authoring Skills in Higher
Education" (EMASHE) project, funded by ITTI. When complete,
publications from EMASHE will comprise tutorials in Hypercard,
Toolbook and Authorware for the Macintosh and PC, together with
appropriate software resources. In addition, separate
publications will cover the design, planning and evaluation of
computer assisted learning packages.
The publication, Evaluation 1, deals with the planning and
evaluation of courseware during the development phase. Beginning
with the question as to whether a multimedia learning program is
the correct solution to a perceived learning problem, the booklet
moves through all stages of development and offers suggestions
for the on-going evaluation of the product during those stages.
Four appendices are included in the publication:
Appendix A: An example of a proposal for a piece of courseware
in Hispanic Studies.
Appendix B: A checklist for the selection of authoring software.
Appendix C: An extract from "Practical Methods for Measuring
Human-Computer Interaction" by S.W. Draper dealing with
Think-Aloud Protocol.
Appendix D: Part of the ILDEC evaluation template, produced at
the University of Teesside included as a prompt for authors
designing and developing multimedia teaching programs, and a
checklist during quality control evaluation sessions.
Evaluation 2 which is in progress will cover the classroom
evaluation of computer assisted learning packages within Higher
Education degree courses.
