The Design of Multimedia Learning Programs Erica McAteer and Robin Shaw This booklet is one of a group of publications produced as part of the "Establishing Multimedia Authoring Skills in Higher Education" (EMASHE) project, funded by ITTI. When complete, publications from EMASHE will comprise tutorials in Hypercard, Toolbook and Authorware for the Macintosh and PC, together with appropriate software resources. In addition, separate publications cover the design, planning and evaluation of computer assisted learning packages. The ability of the modern computer and available authoring packages to make use of multimedia, sound, graphics, animation, and moving images, is a powerful opportunity and a danger. Authors can be seduced into focusing on the impressive technology while losing sight of the end of engaging, informing and educating the user. What the authors aim to do is to provide guidelines to the design implications of the various components of multimedia courseware, based on research. Some of that research has a long history, for example, on the suitability of typefaces and fonts largely gleaned from paper based studies; other research more specific to the computer, such as that on the use of animation, is in its infancy. The topics covered includeOverall Design, Interactivity, Screen Design, Text, Graphics, Animation, Video, Sound and Colour. The text is illustrated with examples largely drawn from programs in development at the University of Glasgow.
