The successful provision of a suitable training programme is largely
dependent upon an understanding of the needs of those for whom the
training is to be provided. However, often those for whom training
is to be provided require help to determine their training needs.
This can be carried out through a process of Training Needs Analysis
(TNA).

This report focuses on a project undertaken at the University of
Wales Cardiff in which the TNA techniques used by Digital Educational
Services, part of Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), were applied
within one academic department of the university. Staff of the
institution's Computing Centre worked under the guidance of a Digital
consultant to assess the IT training needs of members of the
department concerned.

Details of the stages of the TNA exercise are described and are then
related to their implementation in the case study. Finally, the
DECtask methodology is assessed for its applicability in an academic
department.
