Interoperable?

Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Virtual Library

[HIGH]

The ICE's Virtual Library gives access to the largest repository of full text civil engineering papers in the world. Searching is free and there are pay per view and subscription options for access to the full text.

  • Caren Milloy [c.milloy@jisc.ac.uk] Jisc collections manager email 26/01/05 -
Hoping to get agreement soon to Licence ICE Virtual Library in perpetuity and offer it free to all UK HE and FE institutions. [We would only be doing an agreement with them for a static archive so it would not include the new journals (http://www.ice.org.uk/services/services_journals.asp), but they will re-work it so that there is no gap between them]
  • Mike Chrimes contacted by RM on 27/01/06 about interoperability, etc.
  • 17/02/06- Meeting with Mike Chrimes. It is likely that the ICE will be rebuilding their Db as a result of the JISC Deal. This is likely to be in May 06. This would be an ideal time for ICE to consider exposing metadata from their system. Actions: MM to pass 'Marketing with Metadata' document to MC when it becomes available and ICE to consider best options. MC to pass ICE Proceedings Metadata to RM (on CD) for investigation.
  • Now have the complete ICE VL database as an excell spreadsheet (5575 records). SC could get this into PerX/Xtra with approx 2days effort. Note there are maintenance issues - how would we keep it up to date? Periodic manual updates?
IEEE Xplore

[HIGH]

IEEE Xplore provides access to Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers content. Xplore contains documents from IEEE journals, transactions, magazines, letters, conference proceedings and standards, as well as IEE (Institution of Electrical Engineers) publications. Metadata is freely searchable although access to the full text is via subscription or online article purchase.
http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/Xplore/dynhome.jsp

NB// IEEE is already indexed via Google. Could we get IEEE to periodically give us the same (or similar) metadata that they give to Google?

http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/guide/g_infoac_google.jsp
IEEE Xplore is indexed by Google™ allowing Google search results to include links to IEEE Xplore. Abstract records typically contain the document’s citation and abstract summary. Guests may browse tables of contents or conduct a Basic Search of all brief Abstracts to locate and purchase documents of interest. IEEE Members and users at subscribing institutions have access to complete AbstractPlus records, all search functions, and subscribed full text.

http://www.ieee.org/portal/pages/products/whats-new/wncomp/wncomp0304.html#7
GOOGLE USERS FLOCK TO IEEE XPLORE
IEEE recently announced that researchers worldwide can now locate technical papers published by IEEE when searching online using the Google search engine. Since then, IEEE Xplore traffic from Google users has risen dramatically. IEEE web tracking reports that Google referrals to IEEE Xplore have risen 1000% prior to the indexing of the site by Google. Google delivered 120,000 referrals to the IEEE Xplore Web site in December while the next highest search engine only delivered 19,000 referrals. The brief abstract records for IEEE papers, which Google has indexed, are available free to all researchers through IEEE Xplore. Access to IEEE online documents is available through institutional subscriptions, by individual online article purchase, or through subscriptions available to IEEE members. Visit IEEE Xplore at: www.ieee.org/ieeexplore

  • 3/8/06. RM has contacted Jenny Pickles. Emerald have metadata avaialble for their 18 Engineering journals. They use a data feed, which is ftp'd weekly, and they say that other aggregators find this works OK. It has the relevant metadata - heading/abs/links etc. They don't use Z or OAI, and will read about them and SRU on the 'Marketing metadata', but they almost certainly would prefer us to use their data feed.
