Plan S Journal Checker tool

We are minor partners in a project proposal submitted to cOAlition S to develop a Journal Checker tool which would enable researchers to identify publishing venues which offer a route to comply with the Plan S Principles. the tool will be a simple web interface that will provide an author with concise information regarding their ability to publish in a journal while complying with Plan S. The user should be able to type in the name of their preferred journal, pick their institution, choose their funder, and easily see if that journal enables compliance with their funder’s OA policy and if so, via which route.

Recent Past Projects

LInUX-AD

LInUX-AD (Enabling Final Year students to enhance their cross-disciplinary communication skills through Language Interpretation and User Experience with Agile Development) is a QAA (Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education) Project funded through the Heriot Watt Enhancement Theme Fund to further the university's aim to enhance the graduate attributes of its students. This is a collaborative, cross-disciplinary project between the Department of Languages & Intercultural Studies (LINCS) in the School of Social Sciences (SoSS) and the Department of Computer Sciences (CS) in the School of Mathematics & Computer Sciences (MACS), aiming to enhance the graduating students' profile and hence their employability prospects in a mutually beneficial way.

JEMO

JEMO (Journal TOCs: Expanding Market Opportunities) is a project funded by the EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account (IAA) with twofold objectives:  (1) to help publishers to implement standard access-rights elements in their RSS feeds to enable the systematic identification of Open Access (OA) articles from hybrid and Green OA journals and; (2) to broaden the benefits of current awareness on scholarly publications for researchers from developing countries. The project involves five publisher partners and two important library organisations.

X-PARC

The X-PARC project (XML for Personalised Articles Retrieval and Copyediting) will create a prototype of a new XML-first workflow technology to produce scholarly output in a variety of digital market channel ready forms, in particular current-awareness oriented RSS formats. The project will use the new outputs to prototype a smart personalised current-awareness web interface. Finally the project will propose a suitable open licence policy for the RSS feeds produced by scholarly publishers.

JASS

JASS (Journals and Articles via SUNCAT Services) was a collaboration between EDINA and JournalTOCs to create the JASS Web Service with the aim of enhancing SUNCAT's value and so increase its general usage and importance. As a result of the collaboration, SUNCAT would enable academic libraries to use a convenient and efficient tool to access recent journal TOCs via the SUNCAT interface. The collaboration involves three objectives:  (1) To enrich JournalTOCs metadata to support a new SUNCAT's OpenURL linking at the article level. The objective is to ensure the quality of the metadata to be used in the new feature, to be provided by JournalTOCs to SUNCAT through use of TOCs; (2) to enable SUNCAT with the capacity of displaying the current issues, past issues (from 2008, if available), and future issues (if available) for the journal TOCs provided by JournalTOCs on SUNCAT web pages; and (3) to explore the overall EDINA/SUNCAT/OpenURL architecture in the area of journal/article discovery and the interoperation needed within this architecture.

delOREs

The Delivering Open Educational Resources for Engineering Design (delOREs) Project has created static and dynamic collections of university-level Open Educational Resources (OERs) and other openly available resources relevant to Engineering Design. Doing this it has helped make such resources more easily discovered by those with a specific interest in Engineering Design, and secondly provided a showcase of these materials and examples of their use. The static collection was delivered in the form of a blog. The dynamic collection utilises rule-based facetted classification (developed at Bath University) and Bayesian filtering (developed at Heriot-Watt University) in order to select those OERs from the wider source collections most relevant to particular topics.
